About

Hi, I’m Jacqueline.

I specialise in providing wheelchair accessible tours of Shetland. I want to give you a carefree, enjoyable taste of my home.

I’ve been an Accredited Shetland Green Badge Tourist Guide with the Scottish Tour Guide Association since 2014.  Prior to doing my STGA Green Badge training I spent 8 years as a Shetland Island Council Social Care Worker.

I was born in 1964 & have lived in Shetland since 1971 – more than half a century!   And believe Shetland is one of the most truly special places in the world.   I also believe that with a bit of preparation much of it is genuinely accessible to a wheelchair user.

Being born in 1964, I’m no spring chicken.  One of the nice things about aging is that I’ve realised life is too precious to waste - especially doing things I don’t enjoy.  I love spending time with people, but I’m not so keen on computers - so spend as little time on it as I can get away with.  Hence no blog.

In 2021/’22 I helped Shetland Community Connections with a community-led action research project “Show me that you think of me”.  The research sought to understand the reality of attending social and cultural events or spaces for disabled people, their families and carers in Shetland, and how their experience can be improved.

Being part of the project encouraged me to put my money where my mouth is and buy my 1st wheelchair accessible car from Allied Mobility - plus the driver guiding insurance to go with her.

I found I love being a driver guide so much that I’ve not only renewed my insurance but upgraded to a bigger car.

Meet Winnie (SC24 TNL).  She is a Peugeot Rifter Horizon RS, with a wheelchair docking area plus another 4 passenger seats.

10% of all my tour fees goes to Ability Shetland, who support the efforts of disabled people to realise their full potential in all areas of life.

I don't work with cancellation fees because as Rabbie Burns wrote over 200 years ago “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men Gang aft agley”.  If anything does happen to hinder you arriving in Shetland, you'll be disappointed enough without having to pay for a tour you're not able to take.

Nor do I work with ‘cookies’.  Unless they’re edible and tasty.
